Our Physical Science class built a rollercoaster to do multiple labs.  One of our labs included measuring the distance of the track to help calculate average speed.  Measuring the curvy track challenged students to go past the typical 2-D X and Y-axis that they were used to.  Students added the Z-axis, which was used to measure objects in 3-D.  I was very pleased with how the students interacted with the science content in this lab.  In many ways, this lab served as a cross curricular project because of the math concepts involved.  Kristin McMillan has contributed the following summary of her experience.  –Mr. Chappell

Roller Coaster Lab

During the building process of the roller coaster lab we had to build separate sections and combine them all together when they were all finished. All of the pieces we used to build were color coated and held in different bags to make it easier for everyone to build together as a team. For the “hill” part of the coaster, where the carts go up high and come down on a curved, slanted section we used small battery operated motor that cranked the carts slowly up the hill by a pulley. To measure the roller coaster we used a 3-D Cartesian model that uses 3 axis which were the x, y, and z axis. The x axis goes from east to west; the y axis goes north to south lying flat, and the z axis comes straight out standing up and down. We marked 15 points using that scale, labeling them from A-O. When the coaster was finished being built we also spread tape out on the classroom floor to use as our own 3D Cartesian model and measured out where the points we marked would be on it. –Kristin McMillin
