NAPLES HIGH HOLDS CONCERT TO BENEFIT CHILDREN’S CHARITY
The Naples High School (NHS) Performing Arts Club is proud to present a concert featuring the local cover band “Prospects,” on Wednesday, February 15, starting at 7:00 p.m., in the school’s auditorium (1100 Golden Eagle Circle).
“Prospects” is a six-person local band made up of students from Naples High School (NHS) and the Community School of Naples (CSN). They’ve been playing together for one year and cover music from pop to light rock and even a little bit of country. The band members are Catherine Coons (NHS senior), Sydney Robicheaux (NHS sophomore), Gabe Corso (NHS junior), Sam Granoff (NHS junior), Grant Meyers (CSN junior), and Jimi Quattrocchi (CSN junior).
Proceeds from the concert will benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the NHS Performing Arts Club. St. Jude’s is a world premier pediatric center recognized for its research and treatment of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. The hospital relies on financial support to continue on its lifesaving mission of finding cures and saving children.
Tickets will be $5 at the door, and additional items will also be available for purchase.
To learn more, please contact Naples High School Performing Arts Club sponsor Rick Simmons at 377-2200 or via email at simmonri@collierschools.com.
NAPLES HIGH FISHING CLUB REELS IT IN FOR A GOOD CAUSE
Redfish, snook, and trout – that’s what you’ll be catching at the Naples High School (NHS) Fishing Club’s “Believe 4 Kaine” charity fishing tournament scheduled for Saturday, February 18th, at the Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club (7065 Hamilton Avenue). The event will be held on behalf of four year old Kaine, who is battling Burkitt’s Lymphoma. All proceeds from this catch and release fishing tournament will benefit Kaine’s treatment and medical care expenses.
The competition is set to begin at sunrise on February 18th, with weigh-in and awards scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club. BBQ lunches will be served starting at 2:00 p.m.
There are two divisions – the youth division (12 years old and younger) and the adult division (13 years old and older). You can fish independently or on a two-person team. Since this is a catch and release tournament, the fish caught need to be logged by two photos: one snapshot of the fish and a ruler, and the second of the fish and angler. Winners will be determined by length of fish.
So, grab some bait and dust off your fishing pole! Early registration ends on February 11th.
To learn more about the tournament and associated costs, please contact Stanley Bryant at 784-6843 or click the links below:

NOTE ABOUT THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL CALENDAR
On January 10, 2012, the School Board approved a school calendar that has a school start date of August 13, 2012. This calendar is dependent upon the passage of Sen. Bill Montford's (D-Tallahassee) bill proposal that would give local school boards the authority to set an opening date for schools. If this bill is not passed, the School Board also approved a second calendar that has a school start date of August 20, 2012.
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kamela Patton, has requested parents postpone scheduling vacations until the district knows the results of the legislative session, sometime after March 9, 2012.Both tentative 2012-2013 school calendars have the same winter and spring break dates for students as follows: Winter Break - December 24, 2012 through January 4, 2013; Spring Break - March 11, 2013 through March 15, 2013.

2010-11 NHS SCHOOL GRADE ANNOUNCED
Naples High School earned a B for the 2010.11 school year. The points necessary for an A are “at least 1050.” Naples High School earned 1233 points. Unfortunately, we failed to make large enough gains in reading among the lowest 25% of our students taking the FCAT which automatically drops the grade. We will continue to work reading for all of our students as we press on to benefit students as well as receive the grade our points suggest we earn.
While it is in some ways a little “anticlimactic” to receive last year’s grade when we are approaching the half-way mark of this school year, we can find affirmation that our efforts last year produced positive results and the suggestion that last year’s strategies in addition to some added this year are moving us in a forward direction. (Note the increases across the board in the summary at the top of the attached page. With the exception of accelerated performance, we show increased percentages in all areas. This makes some sense as we increased our participation in accelerated courses which often results in an initial dip in performance.)
Please take some time to review the information attached (CLICK HERE). In addition to the specifics re: Naples High School’s grade, there is a review of the formula regarding the 800 points based on the “non-FCAT” performance measures as well as the School Accountability Report noting which student subgroups at Naples High School need improvement in reading and math.
Parental and community support are a part of this grade, and Naples High School is grateful for both. If you have questions regarding this information, you may contact Dr. Nancy Graham, Principal, at 239-377-2203 or Grahamna@collierschools.com

STUDENT DRESS CODE UPDATE

NHS VOLUNTEERS
We have been advised by the Collier County School System about some "updating" that needs to be done for all volunteers. In an effort to abide by the Jessica Lunsford Act, we are required to Fast Pass every active volunteer each school year.
NHS will need to update your Fast Pass or create one for you if you don't currently have one. Many of you filled out your paperwork and provided your driver's license years ago at lower level schools, but in order to comply we must now update each and every school year. Please see Susan Zenz in our front office at your earliest convenience to get this taken care of. You will need to have your driver's license with you! We are sorry for the inconvenience, but it is for the safety of all! If you have any questions please contact Susan Zenz at NHS main number 377-2200.
If you are a member of another group within Naples High please help us spread the word. This policy applies to ALL school volunteers. For a copy of the Volunteer Log Sheet, please click HERE.
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Naples High School is collecting box tops for Lake Park Elementary School. Please turn in your saved box tops in the collection boxes in the NHS Main Office and Attendance Office. For more information on the brands that are being accepted please click HERE.
